1. Introduction

This addendum supplements Francis James’ main Admissions Policy by outlining additional procedures and commitments relating to:

  1. The assessment of prior learning, including recognition of prior learning (RPL) and experience.

  2. Ensuring equality and diversity in all admissions processes, in line with OfS expectations and relevant UK legislation.

2. Scope

This addendum applies to:

  • All applicants seeking admission to any Francis James programme (undergraduate, postgraduate, or professional courses).

  • Staff involved in recruitment, admissions decisions, and the assessment of applicants’ prior learning.

3. Assessment of Prior Learning

3.1 Purpose

Francis James recognises that applicants may have gained knowledge and skills through formal qualifications, non-formal courses, work experience, and other learning contexts. The aim is to ensure:

  • Fair consideration of all relevant prior learning.

  • Transparent and consistent processes for awarding credit or advanced standing, where appropriate.

3.2 Types of Prior Learning Recognised
  1. Certified Prior Learning (CPL): Formal learning evidenced by official certificates or transcripts from accredited institutions.

  2. Experiential Prior Learning (EPL): Informal or non-traditional learning gained through professional or life experiences, assessed using reflective portfolios or other documented evidence.

3.3 Application Process for RPL

  1. Initial Enquiry: Applicants indicate on their application forms if they wish to be considered for RPL.

  2. Evidence Submission: Applicants submit relevant documentation, such as transcripts, certificates, or a detailed portfolio outlining their experience and learning outcomes.

  3. Assessment Panel: A designated panel of academic staff reviews each application, mapping the evidence provided against the learning outcomes of the target course or module(s).

  4. Decision and Feedback: Applicants are informed of the outcome (full, partial, or no recognition of prior learning) in a timely manner, with clear rationale and, if applicable, advice on further steps.

3.4 Quality Assurance

  • Assessments of prior learning are conducted in accordance with Francis James’ academic standards, ensuring the learning is at an appropriate level and equivalent to the skills or knowledge required by the relevant course.

  • A regular audit of RPL decisions will be carried out to maintain consistency and fairness across departments.

4. Equality and Diversity

4.1 Commitment

Francis James is dedicated to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusivity in all its admissions practices, in accordance with:

  • Office for Students (OfS) requirements

  • Equality Act 2010 and other relevant UK legislation

We aim to eliminate unlawful discrimination and promote a culture of respect and equal opportunity.

4.2 Principles

  1. Fair and Transparent Selection: All applicants are assessed solely on their academic and professional merit, potential, and suitability for the chosen programme.

  2. Reasonable Adjustments: Applicants with disabilities or specific learning differences are offered appropriate adjustments during the admissions process to ensure they are not disadvantaged.

  3. Inclusive Admissions Procedures: Information about the admissions process is made available in accessible formats where reasonably practicable (e.g., large print, alternative digital formats).

  4. Training: Staff involved in admissions receive regular EDI training to ensure unbiased decision-making and awareness of equality legislation.

4.3 Monitoring and Reporting

  • Applicant Data Analysis: We collect and monitor applicant data (e.g., demographic information) to identify any gaps or trends in the admissions process that may indicate bias or underrepresentation.

  • Targeted Outreach: Where monitoring reveals underrepresentation of specific groups, Francis James will develop targeted outreach programmes to encourage applications from these groups.

  • Annual Review: The admissions team will produce an annual report on equality and diversity in admissions, reviewed by senior management to inform continuous improvement initiatives.

5. Complaints and Appeals

  • Applicants have the right to appeal an admissions decision or lodge a complaint if they believe the process was unfair or did not follow policy.

  • All appeals and complaints will be handled according to the Francis James Complaints and Appeals Procedures, ensuring a thorough, timely, and impartial review.

6. Oversight and Implementation

  • The Admissions Office holds operational responsibility for implementing this addendum, including the day-to-day management of RPL processes and EDI considerations.

  • The Senior Management Team oversees policy compliance, alignment with OfS regulations, and overall effectiveness.

7. Review and Amendment

  • This addendum will be reviewed annually alongside the main Admissions Policy or as required by changes in OfS guidance or legislative updates.

  • Any amendments are subject to approval by the Senior Management Team.
