Civil Engineering

What makes Francis James different?

Alongside technical skills, the programme covers broader aspects of the construction industry, including project management, supply chains, financial management and compliance with building regulations. Learners gain proficiency in digital tools such as computer-aided design (CAD), Building Information Modelling (BIM), and other software used to optimise building systems.

Throughout the programme, there is a strong emphasis on sustainability, innovation and professional practice. Learners learn to integrate environmentally responsible design methods, evaluate emerging technologies and develop skills in leadership, teamwork and problem-solving.

  • Teamwork and collaboration

  • Proposal development and presentation

Learners will work collaboratively to investigate a construction-related topic, applying their knowledge of the sector to analyse issues, solve problems and develop an appropriate project proposal.

  • Learners will develop skills in research, planning and collaborative project working, undertaking a sustained investigation into an agreed area of professional practice. The project may address topics such as innovation, sustainability, contracts, health, welfare and safety, or another relevant construction-related subject. Learners will be expected to analyse information, develop justified conclusions and present an appropriate project proposal, demonstrating both group collaboration and individual contribution throughout the project.

Technical Innovation in the Construction Industry

2. Technical Innovation in the Construction Industry (15 credits)

Learners will gain knowledge of technical innovation within the construction industry e.g.:

  • Innovative construction materials

  • Modern building components and systems

  • Sustainable construction technologies

Learners will develop an understanding of how technological advances contribute to innovation within construction, improving the design, performance and sustainability of buildings and infrastructure.

  • Learners will examine innovative materials, components and building systems, considering how they can be applied to improve construction design and performance. They will critically evaluate the role of innovation in supporting sustainable construction, including its environmental, social and commercial benefits. Learners will also assess how emerging technologies and innovative construction methods can contribute to more sustainable infrastructure, ensuring that proposed solutions respond effectively to changing industry expectations.

The Theory and Practice of Leadership & Management in the Construction industry

3. The Theory and Practice of Leadership & Management in the Construction industry (15 credits)

Learners will understand the key leadership and management principles within construction e.g.:

  • Leadership and management styles

  • Team motivation and communication

  • Managing people, resources and information

Learners will develop an understanding of how effective leadership and management contribute to successful construction projects, supporting team performance, decision-making and the efficient use of resources.

  • Learners will examine theories, tools and techniques used to manage people and activities effectively, considering how different leadership approaches can influence workplace performance. They will develop skills in communication, collaboration and motivating others, applying these within practical construction-related situations. Learners will also assess the role of leadership in managing resources, information and organisational responsibilities, developing the professional skills required to respond effectively to changing workplace demands.

Civil Engineering technology

Learners will understand the key principles of civil engineering design and technology e.g.:

  • Civil and structural engineering design

  • Design information and technical documentation

  • Safe and sustainable construction methods

Learners will develop an understanding of how civil engineering design solutions are developed, assessed and communicated, considering practical, safe and ethical construction methods.

  • Learners will explore the civil engineer's role in the development and delivery of construction projects, including design, procurement and project planning. They will develop skills in producing, managing and interpreting technical design information, applying appropriate technology to support civil and structural engineering projects. Learners will also evaluate health and safety, environmental and ethical considerations in civil engineering design, ensuring that proposed solutions are practical, sustainable and appropriate for their intended use.

Civil Engineering planning

5a. Designing and Building Highways (Optional) (15 credits)

Learners will understand the key principles involved in highway engineering e.g.:

  • Highway design and construction

  • Pavement design and materials

  • Highway maintenance and project viability

Learners will develop an understanding of how highways are planned, designed, constructed and maintained, considering safety, sustainability, environmental requirements and the efficient delivery of highway engineering projects.

  • Learners will examine the principles and methodologies that underpin modern highway engineering, including geometric highway design, pavement design and appropriate construction materials. They will develop an understanding of construction and maintenance techniques used throughout the highway lifecycle, considering how these contribute to safe, efficient and sustainable infrastructure.
