Building Services Engineering planning

1. Construction Group Project (30 credits)

Learners will gain knowledge and skills required to undertake a construction-related group project e.g.:

  • Project planning and investigation

  • Teamwork and collaboration

  • Proposal development and presentation

Learners will work collaboratively to investigate a construction-related topic, applying their knowledge of the sector to analyse issues, solve problems and develop an appropriate project proposal.

  • Learners will develop skills in research, planning and collaborative project working, undertaking a sustained investigation into an agreed area of professional practice. The project may address topics such as innovation, sustainability, contracts, health, welfare and safety, or another relevant construction-related subject. Learners will be expected to analyse information, develop justified conclusions and present an appropriate project proposal, demonstrating both group collaboration and individual contribution throughout the project.

Technical Innovation in the Construction Industry

2. Technical Innovation in the Construction Industry (15 credits)

Learners will gain knowledge of technical innovation within the construction industry e.g.:

  • Innovative construction materials

  • Modern building components and systems

  • Sustainable construction technologies

Learners will develop an understanding of how technological advances contribute to innovation within construction, improving the design, performance and sustainability of buildings and infrastructure.

  • Learners will examine innovative materials, components and building systems, considering how they can be applied to improve construction design and performance. They will critically evaluate the role of innovation in supporting sustainable construction, including its environmental, social and commercial benefits. Learners will also assess how emerging technologies and innovative construction methods can contribute to more sustainable infrastructure, ensuring that proposed solutions respond effectively to changing industry expectations.

Theory and Practice of Leadership & Management in the Construction industry

3. The Theory and Practice of Leadership & Management in the Construction industry (15 credits)

Learners will understand the key leadership and management principles within construction e.g.:

  • Leadership and management styles

  • Team motivation and communication

  • Managing people, resources and information

Learners will develop an understanding of how effective leadership and management contribute to successful construction projects, supporting team performance, decision-making and the efficient use of resources.

  • Learners will examine theories, tools and techniques used to manage people and activities effectively, considering how different leadership approaches can influence workplace performance. They will develop skills in communication, collaboration and motivating others, applying these within practical construction-related situations. Learners will also assess the role of leadership in managing resources, information and organisational responsibilities, developing the professional skills required to respond effectively to changing workplace demands.

Building Services Design & Technology

4. Building Services Design & Technology (15 credits)

Learners will understand the key principles of building services design and technology e.g.:

  • Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems

  • Electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems

  • Integrated and sustainable building services design

Learners will develop an understanding of the role of building services engineers in designing and developing effective building systems throughout the construction and operational lifecycle of a project.

  • Learners will develop skills in designing, analysing and implementing building services systems, applying both theoretical knowledge and practical techniques to construction projects. They will examine how different building services can be successfully integrated, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems.

5a. Install and Commission Electrical and Electronic Services (Optional) (15 credits)

Learners will understand the principles involved in electrical and electronic installation and commissioning e.g.:

  • Electrical system installation

  • Testing and commissioning procedures

  • Electrical safety and regulatory requirements

Learners will develop an understanding of how electrical and electronic services progress from design through installation, testing and commissioning to become fully operational building systems.

  • Learners will develop skills in planning, installing, testing and commissioning electrical and electronic services, applying appropriate technical methods and industry procedures. They will examine the principles, techniques and standards associated with electrical installations, ensuring that systems are safe, reliable and appropriate for their intended use.

5b. Install and Commission Mechanical Services (Optional) (15 credits)

Learners will understand the principles involved in mechanical services installation and commissioning e.g.:

  • Mechanical services installation

  • Testing, commissioning and system operation

  • Maintenance and system performance

Learners will develop an understanding of how mechanical services designs are transformed into fully functioning installations, considering the technical, logistical and practical requirements of real-world construction projects.

  • Learners will develop skills in interpreting mechanical services designs, specifications, schematics and layouts, assessing their suitability and feasibility for installation. They will evaluate site-specific challenges and project constraints, including programme requirements, budgets and practical installation considerations

6. Construction Financial Management (15 credits)

Learners will gain knowledge of key financial management principles used in construction e.g.:

  • Cost estimation and tender pricing

  • Cash flow and expenditure control

  • Financial reporting and project viability

Learners will develop an understanding of how contractors and consultants determine project costs, prepare tender submissions and assess the commercial factors that influence the financial viability of construction projects.

  • Learners will develop skills in preparing realistic cost estimates and professional tender documentation, analysing financial information at tender stage and evaluating relevant commercial considerations. They will apply financial management processes to control project income and expenditure, including cash flow monitoring and cost control measures. Learners will also assess the financial viability and performance of construction projects, developing the ability to oversee and optimise financial processes throughout the project lifecycle.

7. Personal and Professional Development (15 credits)

Learners will gain knowledge of key principles of personal and professional development e.g.:

  • Personal Development Planning (PDP)

  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

  • Communication and collaboration skills

Learners will develop structured personal development plans, setting realistic goals for skill enhancement and career advancement while monitoring progress and adapting their plans as necessary.

  • Learners will recognise the importance of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in maintaining and enhancing professional skills, staying up to date with industry developments and supporting long-term employability. Learners will explore how CPD activities can be integrated into their career development strategy. They will also develop advanced communication and collaboration skills, including active listening, negotiation, conflict resolution and effective team working, supporting strong professional relationships and workplace success.

Alongside technical skills, the programme covers broader aspects of the construction industry, including project management, supply chains, financial management and compliance with building regulations.
